The benefits of serving
While making a difference in your community and gaining hands-on experience, you will also receive the following:

Living allowance
All members receive a modest living allowance to cover basic expenses while in service. The amount of the living allowance varies by program.
Money for college and trade school
The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is offered to members who complete a term of service and can be used to pay for qualified school loans or future education expenses.

Loan deferment and interest forbearance
All members are eligible for forbearance for most federally-guaranteed student loans. In addition, members who complete their service term may be eligible for a repayment for the interest that accrue during service.
Professional development
We provide extensive orientation and on-going training to all AmeriCorps members to help them succeed in their service role. Many members use the professional development they receive while in service to jump-start their career and gain transferrable skills that employers value including leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Public Benefits Assistance
Most AmeriCorps members are eligible for public assistance such as Covered CA and CalFresh. As a Safe Passages AmeriCorps member, you will be paired with a Case Manager who will help you navigate the application process and ensure you receive the maximum benefits.
Alumni network
In addition to the many connections you’ll make while in service with Safe Passages, you’ll gain access to the AmeriCorps alumni network, which includes special benefits and resources.

Additional benefits
In addition to the benefits listed above, some members may be eligible for the following:

  • Full-time members receive health insurance and child care reimbursement
  • Full-time members who qualify for CalFresh may also qualify for a $1,000 housing stipend (paid in two installments of $500 during the service term)
  • Members who serve in the Elev8 AmeriCorps or Public Health AmeriCorps programs are eligible for a transportation subsidy of $100 per month (distributed in a gas card or clipper card)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a job or a training program?
The short answer is both and neither! AmeriCorps is a national service program. That means you would be providing community service while receiving a living allowance, money for school, professional development, and all of the other benefits listed above.

Do I need any previous experience to apply?
We have positions for all experience levels, from recent high school graduates to folks with college and graduate degrees. When you apply, we will ask more about your previous experience and help identify the best position for you.

Can current students join?
Many of our part-time AmeriCorps members are also enrolled in school, and you can even earn college credit while serving with Safe Passages!

Do you have remote positions available?
While the majority of our positions require in-person service at a school site, we do have a handful of remote positions available.
